I’m sure you have thought about exploring the world and meeting new people and cultures. Probably more than once, you thought about following your passions and leaving the mundane job you are currently trapped in.

Whatever the case may be, getting out of our comfort zone is not easy. Even if the situation you are in brings you stress, that is still your comfort zone. That is what you know.

Getting out of there takes courage and effort. If you are like me, the one thing I focused my energies on doing is traveling. It’s an experience that changes most people.

By experiencing new cultures and meeting new people, we expand our world and have a better understanding of how the world works, even by just a little.

If you are reading this, then you are probably interested to go on a trip and visit various places. If this is the reason, I’m sure you will be interested to read about the topic I’m going to discuss – travel insurance.

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

backpacking the world

You might be wondering, is this really necessary? Will something even happen while I am on my trip? Why would I spend money on something I will never file a claim on and will just end up being wasted?

These questions are legitimate and merit answers. I offer you some quick answers. Firstly, yes, you need it even if you believe nothing will happen on your trip. As they said, the only certain thing in this world is uncertainty.

No matter how much we plan and prepare for our trip, things can and sometimes will go wrong. A lot of experienced travelers and backpackers thought they have everything accounted for, but still, end up having some troubles along the way.

I am not looking to scare you into stopping your travel. Quite on the contrary. I would like to encourage you to travel while having proper expectations, especially when traveling overseas. What insurance gives you is peace of mind that when the unexpected happens, you are covered.

I’m sure that’s not enough to convince some. So, try and think about it a bit more. I’m sure you have a friend or two who have traveled overseas before. Ask them about their experience and see if they ran into any trouble.

That might help you have a better understanding of how traveling around works. I assure you, money spent on travel insurance is well worth every penny when you don’t have to worry about a lot of things when you are traveling.

Where Should I Get my Policy From?

Okay, so you realized that you need one. But there are plenty of insurance companies out there. Sifting through all of them looking for the best one would take quite some time. Let me take off some of that burden.

I recommend SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, along with World Nomads and True Traveller. If you are looking to move around like traveling nomad, then you will need trustworthy travel insurance on all of your excursions. In this post, we going to talk about SafetyWing Nomad Insurance.

There are four key things why I recommend Safety Wing Insurance.

    • This means that you can sign up and get a policy with Safety Wing even if you have already started your travel.

Monthly Automatic Payments

    • Their insurance policies work like a subscription. You choose the start date and your policy will automatically extend for another 28 days until you pick an end date. This gives you the liberty to explore the world without worrying about your policy expires.

Home Country Visits are Covered

    • Your medical coverage extends for another 30 days after you’ve come home from a 90-day trip overseas. This is great when you are only planning to come home and visit for a few weeks before resuming your journey.

    • Up to 2 Children under 10 years old (per family) can be included on your insurance, free of charge. If you are planning on a family trip of a lifetime, then this is your best deal.

Their plan is pretty straightforward and starts at $40 for a coverage period of four weeks. As mentioned earlier, this works like a subscription. It will continue to renew every month unless you cancel it. This means that as long as you can fund the policy, you will be covered.

Below is a more detailed table of the inclusions, but this is not full disclosure. It is still best to look at your policy when you do get your nomad travel insurance at SafetyWing.

How to Make a Claim?

As with any insurance policy, the claim process is part of the deal. We want to make sure that we know how to process a claim if we need to use our insurance. Well, SafetyWing works similarly to others.

To make a claim, you must submit an official claim for anything that needs to be paid by SafetyWing. These claims also include treatment or services wherein SaftyWing will be billed directly by the Service Provider. This means that no payments will be made by SafetyWing unless a claim has been submitted prior.

According to them, the Notice of Claim, Claimant’s Statement and Authorization, and Proof of claim must be mailed to this address:

Tokio Marine HCC - MIS Group
P.O. Box 2005
Farmington Hills,
MI 48333 USA

All other details will be laid out in your policy, so don’t forget to read it and be familiar with each part of your policy. With everything set, now you’re ready to go on your adventure like a nomad.

Where to Go?

You’re all ready and excited. With SafetyWing backing you up, you’re probably wondering where to go first. There are many travel destinations. You do have an entire world to explore. Picking your first travel destination can be tricky.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the great jungle safaris of Africa or the great picturesque places in Europe. However, there’s also an entire region of the world that you should consider visiting, which is Southeast Asia.

You’ve heard of Vietnam for sure and of Japan, and Thailand. These are just a few of the many places that many Europeans, Americans, and the like have found to be great places to spend much of their time with.

Then you also got the Philippines with its great beaches and culture. Overall, Southeast Asia is a great place to start. It is cheaper and you get to experience new cultures and meet new great and friendly people.

With your nomad trip insurance in tow, you can travel to these locations with peace of mind. Also, while traveling to the Philippines, make sure you don’t miss some of the best cultural events in Southeast Asia.

Insured for Driving a Motorbike?

Yes, as long as the accident does not fall under any exclusions, such as the exclusions for racing and intoxication.

One of the best reasons I suggest these countries is because it is a great place to go on long rides on a motorcycle. They have great picturesque tropical mountain ranges and agricultural fields that you can visit by doing a road trip cross country.

There are many available places to rent a motorcycle from. Caution is, of course, recommended when going on a road trip, but with your policy comes personal liability and medical coverage in cases when something untoward happens.

You can go back and look at the details above if you want to review the coverages for medical and personal liability. Make sure you have your driver’s license and always follow the guidelines from the company you rented your motorcycle from.

Traveling is great, exciting, and fun! I would recommend anybody, when possible, go and have a trip and experience new things in their life. Always remember to get yourself covered.

Luckily, I’ve never had to make a claim so far, but in case I do, I’m sure I’ll be well taken care of by SafetyWing Insurance. Insurance for Nomads, by Nomads.
